Probably the most famous Native American in US history, Matoaka (nicknamed Pocahontas) is usually described in terms of the famous men in her life -- her father, her husband or her son. In this book, Kathleen Krull focuses on the mischievous girl who saved John Smith's life and rescues the Jamestown settlers -- only to later become an English captive who falls in love with and marries John Rolfe. Krull also covers her early death in England, where she was regarded as an example of civilizing British influences.
Pocahontas (c.1595 – March 21, 1617) whose formal names were Matoaka (or Matoika) and Amonute was a Virginia Indian princess notable for having assisted colonial settlers at Jamestown in present-day Virginia. She was converted to Christianity and married the English settler John Rolfe. After they traveled to London, she became famous in the last year of her life. She was a daughter of Wahunsunacawh, better known as Chief or Emperor Powhatan, who headed a network of tributary tribal nations in the Tidewater region of Virginia (called Tenakomakah by the Powhatan). These tribes made up what is known as the Powhatan Chiefdom and were part of the Algonquian family.
