In a chair turning pages sitting in the cockpit flying high in the sky READ AND RISE. Through reading, children can be inspired to become almost anything: pilot, teacher, firefighter, doctor, chef, astronaut. READ AND RISE relays this message through vivid photographs and poetic words that encourage children to READ AND RISE.
The newest addition to the Read and Rise literacy initiative, a collaboration between the National Urban League and Scholastic, is an attractive visual commercial for using books to promote the power of reading and, as the book flap notes, "inspire African American children to achieve their dreams." A joint effort of the husband-and-wife team that created Shades of Black (2000), the book, which opens with a poem by Maya Angelou, combines clear, spare text with beautiful color photographs of smiling Aftican American children interacting with books, exploring, discovering, and imagining all kinds of ambitions--from flying a plane to becoming a fireman.
